SEMARANG, Indonesia, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Heavy rains and flooding striking north central Java have swamped an airport runway and paralyzed much of the area, Indonesian officials say.
The northern coastal area, popularly known as Pantura, has been inundated by floodwaters, including eight-inch-deep waters covering the runway of Ahmad Yani Airport in Semarang, which forced airlines to cancel flights into and out of the central Java capital, the Jakarta Post reported.
"We'd hoped to fully resume operations at 1 p.m. but the rain fell heavily again," airport general manager Bambang Suwastono said Monday, adding that air traffic had normalized by 4 p.m.
Officials of the PT Kereta Api railway said 10 Semarang lines had been affected, with northern trains having to be rerouted onto southern lines. Railway officials said three trains were stranded mid-journey, including two from Jakarta to Semarang, the Post reported.
