Bill would end travel ban to Cuba

WASHINGTON, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- The U.S. Congress is considering a bill to allow unrestricted travel from the United States to Cuba.

The bill introduced by Rep. William Delahunt, D-Mass., would end a travel ban enacted in 1963 and would prevent the president from regulating travel to the island unless an armed danger arose, The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Tuesday.

The Cuban American National Foundation wants the bill amended to say Cuban exiles can visit the island whenever they wish to see family, but tourists should continue to be banned until the Cuban government shows some sign of democratic reform.

During his campaign, President Barack Obama said he favored reducing travel restrictions to Cuba. The bill's sponsors include Reps. Sam Farr, D-Calif., and Ron Paul, R-Texas.
