Witness say Kercher, Knox grew apart

PERUGIA, Italy, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Meredith Kercher and American Amanda Knox's friendship had dwindled prior to the British student's death in Italy, a witness testified Saturday.

Filomena Romanelli, who lived with the two women in Perugia, alleged in court that Kercher and Knox had grown apart in the weeks before Kercher was found brutally killed, The Times of London reported.

"At the start they had a good relationship," Romanelli testified in Knox's murder trial. "They had no reason not to get along."

Knox, a 21-year-old Seattle woman, and her 24-year-old former Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, stand accused of killing Kercher on Nov. 2, 2007, in the cottage the women shared.

Both Knox and Sollecito have been in jail for 15 months while awaiting trial, The Times said.

The British newspaper said Ivory Coast national Rudy Guede was convicted last October in relation to the 2007 killing of Kercher, 21, and sentenced to 30 years in prison.
