CARACAS, Venezuela, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Students rallied Saturday in Caracas calling on Venezuelans to reject a constitutional amendment that would allow President Hugo Chavez another term.
Chavez is constitutionally barred from running again when his second six-year term expires in 2013. Polls show a slim majority of voters support lifting any term limits on the president, with 51.5 percent saying they plan to vote for it and 48 percent opposing it, The Times of London reported.
A similar referendum failed to pass in 2007.
Hundreds of young people attended Saturday's rally, CNN reported.
Chavez, a former army officer, has become known as a strident enemy of the U.S. government, famously calling former President George W. Bush a "devil" during a speech at the United Nations. In Venezuela, he used high oil prices to build a welfare state that may no longer be sustainable now that the price of oil has dropped, CNN said.
