Stimulus must do the job, Gibbs says

WASHINGTON, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- President Barack Obama wants a stimulus package that is large enough to address the depth of the U.S. economic downturn, the White House said Thursday.

"I think the president was clear today ... that we need a package that meets the size and the scope of (these) challenges," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday during a news briefing.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden used their bully pulpits to urge the passage of an economic stimulus passage that he could sign.

"The president continues to watch what happens on Capitol Hill, and I think we're making progress toward getting a package that he thinks ... will move our economy forward and create jobs. ... The plan also has what many economists believe is the best way to stimulate the economy, and that is by spending money that will create jobs. I think that's the best way to do it."
