MP: Gov't must say if complicit in torture

LONDON, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- A member of Parliament says the British government must respond to allegations of torture in a court case involving a detainee held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Conservative Party MP David Davis, citing a Wednesday British High Court ruling that reportedly determined Guantanamo detainee Binyam Mohamed was tortured, demanded that Foreign Secretary David Milliband tell Parliament if Britain cooperated with the United States in any such torture, the BBC reported.

The High Court ruling also suggested the U.S. government threatened to withdraw intelligence help from Britain if details of its findings were released, Davis claimed in the House of Commons.

Mohamed, 30, a one-time British resident who has been held at Guantanamo for four years on terrorism charges, is accused by U.S. authorities of conspiring with al-Qaida leaders to plan a series of terrorist attacks. But he claims the evidence against him was obtained through torture, and the case allegedly includes allegations that Britain was complicit in those acts.

Davis demanded that Miliband explain why the judge says American officials intervened in British justice and clarify whether the government has cooperated in any suspects' torture, the BBC reported.
