Heroin causes close call for 5 Philly kids

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Philadelphia police confirmed that the powdered "candy" being passed around by five second-graders was actually heroin.

A gym teacher spotted the boys dipping into a plastic bag at a South Philly elementary school and confiscated it, the Philadelphia Inquirer said Wednesday.

"Our belief at this time is that they (the boys) thought it was candy," said police Sgt. Ray Evers.

One of the kids actually put some of the not-so-sweet substance in his mouth and immediately spit it out. He and his classmates were all taken to Children's Hospital Tuesday to be checked out.

"Our belief at this time is that they (the boys) thought it was candy," said police Sgt. Ray Evers.

Detectives were tracking down the source of the drugs on Wednesday and had not announced any arrests. Children's services officials were also involved, the Inquirer said.
