Three dead in snowy Ind. traffic pileup

NOBLESVILLE, Ind., Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Three people died and several others were injured Tuesday when heavy snow triggered a 20-car pileup near Indianapolis, officials said.

The accident happened on Interstate 69 in Noblesville, Ind., about 25 miles northeast of Indianapolis, and was one of dozens of transportation mishaps in central Indiana during the morning commute, WRTV-Indianapolis reported.

Police said the pileup involved a tractor-trailer and numerous cars after heavy snow dramatically cut visibility and roads had been made icy. Southbound I-69 was closed from Anderson to Fishers, Ind., as a result of the crash, the station reported.

In addition to Indianapolis, on-and-off blizzard conditions also hit Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio, a bit later Tuesday, where similar quick 1-to-3-inch snowfalls caused instant ice-ups, Accuweather.com reported.

Slippery roads caused by light to moderate snow falling along the Interstate 95 corridor and in the northeastern United States through Tuesday tonight were forecast, although the snow was not expected to come down in any significant amounts, the meteorologists said.
