WEST BROMWICH, England, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- A Manchester United fan returning from watching the English soccer club win fell from a bus and was killed by a car that hit him on a motorway.
Other fans on the bus from Newport in South Wales told The Daily Mail they believe Daniel McFarlane, 22, opened the emergency exit door believing it to be the toilet. McFarlane had reportedly been drinking both on the trip to the game and on the return.
"Danny was just a beautiful boy in every way -- looks and personality," his aunt, Diane Lane, told the newspaper. "His mother loved him so much. He was her only child and her life. It hasn't sunk in yet -- she keeps thinking he's going to walk through the door.'
Official fan clubs said that they do not allow drinking during bus trips to matches. But they said unofficial "rebel" clubs are often less particular.
A spokesman for West Midlands police said that the death Saturday night is being treated as an accident.
