DETROIT, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been freed from jail after serving 99 days for two felony perjury convictions, observers said.

Kilpatrick, looking shaggy and thinner than when he entered the Wayne County Jail in Detroit, said nothing as he was released Monday, waving as he was whisked off in a Chevy Suburban, The Detroit News reported.

Kilpatrick attorney Willie Gary told reporters: "He's upbeat. He's not bitter. He has grown … He wants to get on with his life."

Kilpatrick was given time off his 120-day sentence for good behavior. His sentence on political corruption charges also included five years probation, paying $1 million in restitution, surrendering his law license and his resignation as mayor.

Gary said Kilpatrick emerged in good spirits, noting that he was excited to have lost 25 pounds.

The Detroit Free Press reported that although Kilpatrick is due to join his wife, Carlita, and their three sons in Texas as early as Tuesday, his first stop was apparently at the home of his mother, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich.
