Carnahan enters Missouri Senate race

WASHINGTON, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Robin Carnahan of Missouri's most prominent Democratic family announced Tuesday she will run for the U.S. Senate to succeed retiring Republican Kit Bond.

CQ Politics reported that she will campaign to join a chamber to which her late father, former Gov. Mel Carnahan, was elected posthumously in 2000 after he died in a campaign plane crash.

Robin Carnahan's mother, Jean Carnahan, was appointed to the seat for two years. Her brother is in his third term representing the St. Louis-area 3rd Congressional District.

"It's time we had elected leaders ready to stop the bickering and start solving problems, like rebuilding our economy so that is works for everyone and making government accountable for every nickel it spends," she said in an Internet announcement.
