Arizona State settles suit rape

PHOENIX, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Arizona State University has agreed to pay $850,000 to a former student who claims she was raped by a member of the football team.

Under terms of the settlement, Arizona's three state universities must also change the way they respond to complaints of sexual assault and sexual harassment, The Arizona Republic reported. The plaintiff and her family will be involved in setting up an office of student safety coordinator, who is to report for five years on the university's response to complaints of assault and harassment.

The unidentified woman reported to police in March 2004 that she had been assaulted by Darnel Henderson, a student attending the university on a football scholarship. The Maricopa District Attorney's Office decided against prosecution, even though its investigation found evidence of sexual assault, because a conviction seemed unlikely.

Henderson was allowed to complete the semester and then expelled.
