Kentucky residents struggle after storm

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Kentucky's governor says more than 250,000 people remain without power from the ice storm and some may not have electricity until mid-month.

Last week's storm was "the biggest natural disaster that this state has ever experienced in modern history," said Gov. Steve Beshear.

The storm has been blamed for the deaths of at least 16 people, many of them killed by carbon monoxide poisoning after they moved generators inside to produce heat and electricity, CNN reported Monday.

An estimated 6,500 people are living in shelters, said Gary Rogers, a spokesman for the state Emergency Management Agency.

"Folks that thought they could weather it out are now heading to shelters because they're running out of supplies," Rogers told CNN.

National Guard Troops will continue to go door-to-door checking on people, especially those expected to be without power for another couple of weeks, CNN reported.
