Bill Gates predicts long downturn

DAVOS, Switzerland, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- The global economic crisis could continue for up to four years, Microsoft founder Bill Gates told the BBC during an interview in Switzerland.

Gates was at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, promoting his philanthropic work. He said the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has lost about 20 percent of its value in the downturn.

The world's richest man said he expects the economy to turn around since capitalism has demonstrated its vitality. He also said the poor around the world will continue to need help from rich people and governments during the downturn.

Gates has given up a day-to-day role in the Seattle software giant Microsoft to focus on the foundation.
