Tanker pilot avoids disaster without power

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- A tanker pilot managed to avoid a collision near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco despite his vessel losing all power, an official says.

Capt. Peter McIsaac, San Francisco Bar Pilots Association president, said Capt. Dave McCloy of the Overseas Cleliamar tanker used quick thinking to successfully avoid a potential disaster in San Francisco Bay this week, the San Francisco Chronicle said Thursday.

"Captain McCloy did a great job," McIsaac said regarding Tuesday afternoon's near disaster.

The incident took place shortly before sunset as the Overseas Cleliamar finished passing under the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Chronicle said the tanker endured an electrical generator failure, leaving McCloy without both power and steering capabilities.

To avoid crashing into nearby rocks, McCloy had his crew strategically drop an anchor that ultimately stopped any potentially disastrous crash.
