LAS VEGAS, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Las Vegas police searching for a man allegedly planning an armored car heist found jewelry apparently stolen from former Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, R-Colo.
Brett Combs is suspected of holding up Campbell's jewelry gallery in Durango, Colo., Nov. 17, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. Durango Police Detective Robert Brammer said Combs allegedly held up a clerk at gun point and made off with two cases of Indian-style bracelets, rings and pendants.
"This is very recognizable jewelry," Brammer said. "It's stamped with the senator's name on it. Each one has a custom serial number that goes along with it."
Campbell, one of the few American Indians to have served in Congress, represented Colorado for three terms in the House and two in the Senate. He switched from Democrat to Republican in 1995, two years into his first Senate term.
Police in Las Vegas said they discovered $400,000 in jewelry in Combs' home, $25,000 in smoke shop paraphernalia, also believed to be stolen, and firearms. Brammer said not all the jewelry stolen from Campbell's gallery has been recovered.
