Panda cubs unveiled in Chinese quake area

CHENGDU, China, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A group of 13 panda cubs born after a 2008 earthquake devastated China's Sichuan province have enjoyed their first group show, sources said Wednesday.

The panda cubs born at the Wolong panda breeding base performed for visitors for the first time since their birth, which occurred shortly after an 8.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Chinese province May 12, China's official state-run Xinhua news agency said.

Five staff members and one panda were killed at the Sichuan breeding site during the quake, which left more than 80,000 people dead or missing.

The devastating earthquake also destroyed 14 of the site's 32 holding pens, forcing surviving pandas to be relocated.

A total of 15 panda cubs have been born at the Sichuan site since the quake with 13 surviving, Xinhua said.

Li Desheng, China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center vice director, confirmed the 13 cubs are all healthy and still growing.
