LATROBE, Pa., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania teen has admitted it was he and not some unknown assailant who lit the large firecracker that exploded in his lap, police said.
Latrobe police have decided Wesley Kimmick's initial reports of being the target of threats were probably not true and that the 17-year-old had been fooling around with the device.
"Based on evidence collected and an interview with the victim, it has been determined that (Kimmick) found a flash-powder/gunpowder-based firework in an unlocked cabinet" in the home, Officer John Sleasman said.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said Wednesday the blast from the M-80 or M-100 firecracker cost Kimmick his right hand and leg and would require more surgeries, including skin grafts.
The explosion last week at the home of Kimmick's grandparents was significant enough that the Allegheny County Bomb Squad and U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms responded to the scene.
