U.K. burglar confesses to 500 break-ins

GLOUCESTER, England, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- A British burglar says an epiphany and a photographic memory led to his confession to more than 500 break-ins and vehicle thefts.

The Daily Telegraph said Tuesday that 31-year-old Stuart McCormick stunned Gloucester police with details of 303 residential burglaries and 201 vehicle-related crimes, including the theft of a dump truck.

"The police are quite satisfied they are genuine," said McCormick's lawyer, Jon Holmes. "His memory is quite astounding."

Holmes said his client wanted to clear his conscience of the crimes he committed to support a long-running drug habit after being arrested in 2007.

The newspaper said McCormick actually took detectives to the scene of his many crimes. He was sentenced to nearly four years in prison but will likely be out by summer, Holmes predicted.
