ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Police in Antananarivo fired warning shots into the air Tuesday to disperse looters as civil unrest in Madagascar's capital churned through a fourth day.

IRIN reported many food and other stores had been broken into, and flames were reported near the central market area.

A Malagasy Red Cross spokesman told the United Nations-sponsored news network that two people were killed and 17 wounded Monday when anti-government protests turned violent.

Antananarivo Mayor Andry Rajoelina has accused the government of anti-democratic actions, including suppressing the news media. He has called for President Marc Ravalomanana to step down, and for the formation of a transitional government, which he would lead.

He also has called for a general strike in Antananarivo.

Ravalomanana has called for calm, cutting short a trip to South Africa for a summit of regional leaders. He has urged people reject participation in the "revolt" incited by the mayor.
