Fighting continues in Darfur

EL FASHER, Sudan, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Air strikes and artillery pounded rebel positions outside El Fasher in Sudan's northern Darfur region again Tuesday, the United Nations said.

While no civilian deaths were reported as a result of the fighting a few miles outside the city where the United Nations-African Union Mission has its Darfur headquarters, the situation was tense and the movement of international personnel was limited, the agency said.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the resurgence in fighting, saying it threatens civilian lives and jeopardizes political efforts to reach a lasting peace.

Those clashes followed fighting previously this month involving the Sudanese Armed Forces, the Justice and Equality Movement and Sudan Liberation Army/ Minni Minawi.

The mission also reported that fighting between the government and rebel forces in Muhajeriya in southern Darfur prompted about 3,000 people to gathering around the mission's camp there for shelter and protection.

Three civilians were reportedly injured there.

Meanwhile, local officials say clashes in southern Sudan's Warrap state have left 41 people dead and hundreds dispalced in the past two months, IRIN.

"The fighting has not stopped," Wol Deng Atak, a deputy chairman of Warrap State parliamentary caucus, told IRIN in Juba Tuesday. "There is still sporadic fighting all over the state."
