Security tight for India's Republic Day

NEW DELHI, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Ground-to-air security blanketed New Delhi Monday during Republic Day celebrations.

Mindful of the deadly attacks on Mumbai in November, anti-aircraft guns and sharpshooters were deployed throughout the city while paramilitary personnel and Delhi police guarded the parade route, Press Trust of India reported.

Indian President Pratibha Patil unfurled the country's flag and received the salute from parade units as they marched by the reviewing stand. Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, a guest for the celebrations. The country's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh did not attend because he was recuperating from coronary bypass surgery.

Terrorists assaulted India's financial and entertainment hub in November, killing about 170 people.
