N. Korea says Seoul plans invasion

PYONGYANG, North Korea, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- North Korea has accused South Korea of holding military exercises to prepare for a war against it and warned it would "wipe out" invaders.

Pyongyang asserted in an official publication released Monday that military maneuvers being conducted by the South were a response to its declaration last week of an "all-out confrontation posture" against the conservative government of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, the South's Yonhap news agency reported.

In a commentary published in Minju Joson, a newspaper published by the North's cabinet, officials said Seoul's "severe winter training" was "aimed to deliberately get on the nerves of the army and people of the DPRK in a bid to invent a pretext for provoking a war of aggression against it."

The article promised the North would "mercilessly wipe" out invaders should war break out.

Seoul officials told Yonhap the winter training exercises were merely part of its military's regular training scheduled throughout the year.
