COLEMAN, Fla., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- A major fight in a federal prison in Florida Sunday afternoon left eight inmates wounded, authorities said.
A Bureau of Prisons official said the fight broke out about 2:45 p.m. EST in the recreation yard at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex, Central Florida News 13 in Orlando reported. The facility has since been secured.
Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Traci Billingsley said one of the injured inmates suffered a gunshot wound, CNN reported. Joe Brown, a spokesman at Orlando Regional Medical Center, said initial reports were that the patients received there were "stabbing/shooting victims," the news network said.
Helicopters were used to ferry the wounded inmates to hospitals in the region, the TV station said.
No prison staff members were seriously injured, the report said.
There was no indication what triggered the violence at the prison, which has four sections that house low-, medium- and high-security inmates.
