Virgin Mary image defaced in Chicago

CHICAGO, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- An image of the Virgin Mary found underneath the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago has been defaced with graffiti, police said Friday.

Police said the demonic graffiti found on the mysterious image has lingered for more than two weeks and marked the most recent attempt to desecrate the site, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The image was found on the city's north side in 2005 by hospital worker Obdulia Delgado. It soon became a site of worship where religious followers have placed artwork and flowers.

But graffiti taggers have also visited the site, with one adding a gaping mouth to Virgin Mary image.

No details were reported on how the stain deemed a Virgin Mary image was formed

Police told the Tribune that there have been no official complaints about the most recent bout of vandalism, which the Illinois Department of Transportation is responsible for removing.
