VATICAN CITY, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Pope Benedict XVI marked World Communications Day by launching the Vatican YouTube channel Friday.

The pope said that new technology is "truly a gift to humanity" when it is used to reach out and "promote understanding," The Times of London reported. But he said that it can also be misused to promote hatred and share degrading images.

The Rev. Federico Lombardi, the pope's spokesman, said that the channel will include no advertising and will not cost the Vatican anything since it already has radio and TV facilities. As many as four clips will be posted every day showing excerpts from the pope's speeches or video of his activities.

The clips will be in Italian with translations into English, German and Spanish.

Lombardi said that viewers will be able to comment on the Vatican clips. But he said that there are no plans to respond to criticism or commentary.
