JERUSALEM, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- The Israeli military says it accomplished all of its goals during the recently concluded assault on Hamas in Gaza.
Paratroopers Brigade Cmdr. Herzi Halevi says the three-week operation destroyed 80 percent of the 300 tunnels that Hamas forces used to smuggle arms and equipment into Gaza, The Jerusalem Post reported Friday.
Halevi said during the Gaza operation, the Israeli Defense Forces came across large amounts of explosives, booby-trapped houses and attempts to kidnap troops.
He added that his soldiers made a great effort not to harm innocent civilians.
Halevi said since the end of Operation Cast Lead, Hamas has seized control of all the remaining tunnels and has been moving in additional arms.
"No one really believed that Gaza would be completely clean of rocket launchers and tunnels," Halevi said.
An official of the Palestinian Authority said Israel's failure to overthrow Hamas during Operation Cast Lead was a big mistake.
"The fact that Hamas is still in power is bad for all," the official said.
