ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- The grandfather of slain toddler Caylee Anthony has been taken into involuntary custody by the state of Florida for a psychiatric evaluation, his lawyer says.

Attorney Brad Conway says George Anthony was admitted to Halifax Medical Center for observation Friday after he was located at a Daytona Beach motel, WFTV, Orlando, reports.

Daytona Police Chief Mike Chitwood says Anthony left home early Thursday morning and failed to show up for an afternoon meeting.

"He had text-messaged family members that he wanted to end his life," Chitwood told WFTV.

Authorities located Anthony's car at the Hawaii Motel by using GPS and signals from his cell phone.

His daughter, Casey, is charged in the disappearance and death of her two-year-old daughter, Caylee, whose remains were found several blocks from the family home last month.
