WASHINGTON, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts didn't quite get it right the first time so President Barack Obama retook his oath of office Wednesday.
Roberts administered the oath the second time, as well, at 7:35 p.m. in the White House's Map Room, the New York Daily News reported.
"We believe the oath of office was administered effectively and that the president was sworn in appropriately (Tuesday)," White House counsel Greg Craig said in a statement ahead of the occasion.
"Yet, the oath appears in the Constitution itself. And out of the abundance of caution, because there was one word out of sequence, Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath a second time."
At issue was the word "faithfully," which Roberts misplaced after Obama interrupted him during the momentous occasion Tuesday, the News said. Constitutional law experts said the do-over probably wasn't necessary but was done to avoid any gray area.
This time, Roberts asked the president if he was ready. Obama said he was ready "and we're going to do it very slowly."
Obama retook the oath without benefit of having a bible at hand, the News said.
