WASHINGTON, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Wednesday she wants reports on how the agency fulfills its mission to protect the nation.
Napolitano said she wants oral reports next week on such things as how the department works to protect critical infrastructure, how the agency shares intelligence with local and state officials, and how it provides transportation security.
The directives came on the former Arizona governor's first day as the Homeland Security Department chief. Napolitano will issue other directives on the agency's other missions in the coming days.
They will include orders on preparedness, response, recovery and immigration, the statement said.
"One of my top priorities is to unify this department and to create a common culture. These action directives are designed to begin a review, evaluation and dialogue between the various functions of this department and me," Napolitano said. "I look forward to receiving the information and to working with the offices and agencies involved to make DHS a more effective and a more efficient department."
