Ice knocks Mount Hood climber to her death

MOUNT HOOD, Ore., Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Oregon sheriff's deputies say a mountain climber fell to her death on Mount Hood Wednesday after being knocked off her feet by a falling chunk of ice.

Clackamas County sheriff's Det. Jim Strovink told The (Portland) Oregonian that Brooke Colvin, 31, of Portland, Ore., fell some 400 feet after being struck in the face by a piece of ice while climbing with her husband.

The victim's husband, Thad Stavn, 33, climbed down safely from the Hogsback-Pearly Gates area of the mountain. Another climbing party witnessed the fall and called for help on a cell phone.

Strovink said a current thaw on the mountain had loosened ice chunks the size of basketballs and made the area unstable for climbing.

The Oregonian said Colvin's body would be recovered by a search team using a SnowCat.
