Pakistan promises open Mumbai probe

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Pakistan says it will conduct an open and transparent investigation of the information sent to it by India on suspects in November's Mumbai terror attacks.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told British Secretary of State for Defense John Hutton Monday that the ministry of interior had appointed a team of experts to look into the information provided by India on those Islamic militants based in Pakistan that New Delhi believes are responsible for planning the attacks Nov. 26-29, the Pakistani newspaper Dawn reported Tuesday.

During the meeting, Hutton reportedly acknowledged that Pakistan itself was a victim of terrorism and said he was encouraged by Gilani's reassurances that Pakistan would share the results of its Mumbai probe with India.

Also on Monday, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, meeting with military and economic officials in Islamabad, renewed the government's commitment to battle terrorism and urged NATO forces to stop drone attacks against Taliban militants based in the country's lawless tribal areas, sources told Dawn.

Zardari said Pakistan's tensions with India will be reduced if India acted positively on its offer for joint efforts to track down terrorists, the newspaper said.
