Winds, rain, snow still socking Britain

LONDON, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Britain faced more wild weather Monday after a weekend that saw one woman killed when 100 mph winds battered the country, meteorologists said.

Heavy downpours and severe wind gusts toppled power lines and trees, with a Northern Ireland woman dying Saturday as wind-blown tree fell into her car, the Daily Mail reported.

The severe weather continued Monday as more strong winds, rain and snow. Maritime officials said a cargo ship lost 1,500 tons of timber in rough seas in the English Channel, while in Scotland, a military plane was called on to help take prematurely born twins from a blizzard-hit island to a hospital.

Drivers in the eastern England city of Colchester were plagued by torrential rain during the Monday morning rush hour, the British tabloid said. Forecasters blamed the severe weather on a powerful jet stream coming in from the Atlantic Ocean, causing deep low pressure to develop.
