BANGKOK, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Charges that illegal immigrants from Burma were dumped at sea in boats with no food and no engines will be investigated, the Thai government said Saturday.

Refugees International, a Washington group, and the Arakan Project, which is based in Bangkok, said as many as 1,000 people may have been forced back to sea after the Thai Navy intercepted their boats, the Bangkok Post reported. The migrants were described as both Rohingya refugees from Burma and migrants from Bangladesh hoping to get to Malaysia to find work.

Migrants who reached the Andaman Islands or Aceh Province in Indonesia said they were detained on a Thai island where they were subjected to brutal treatment, and were then forced to board a barge with their hands tied, the BBC reported.

Adm. Khamthon Phumhiran denied mistreatment of immigrants and said there was no need for an investigation.
