N. Korea says has weapons-grade plutonium

PYONGYANG, North Korea, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- North Korea says it has enough weapons-grade plutonium to make up to six nuclear bombs and has ratcheted up its saber-rattling against its southern neighbor.

The New York Times reported Saturday that in response to the reports, South Korea has ordered its military to heighten its efforts along its fortified border with North Korea.

A North Korean army spokesman warned in a statement delivered over state-run television that South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and his "puppet military war hawks" had "driven our revolutionary armed forces to take a strong step to wipe them out."

"Strong military measures will follow from our revolutionary armed forces," the spokesman said.

News about the possible conversion of North Korea's plutonium stocks to military use was delivered Saturday by Selig Harrison, director of the Asia program at the Center for International Policy in Washington.
