City official nabbed in pot bust

YREKA, Calif., Jan. 17 (UPI) -- A city councilwoman in Northern California was arraigned Friday in connection with the discovery of 34 pounds of marijuana at her home, officials said.

Katrina Howard, who was elected to the Mount Shasta City Council in November, was one of 33 people arrested following a four-month probe of illegal drug sales at Yreka and Mount Shasta high schools, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

The investigation began after authorities received tips that Howard, 40, was involved in selling drugs to students, California Department of Justice Special Agent in charge Jim Parker said. The Siskiyou County Interagency Task Force said an undercover agent posed as a student at the schools as part of the investigation.

Howard was arraigned in Siskiyou County Superior Court on a variety of charges, including conspiracy to sell marijuana and maintaining a residence where marijuana is stored or sold, the Times said.

She was being held in the Siskiyou County Jail, the report said.
