Carter calls for deeper ties with China

SHANGHAI, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter says China and the United States must help each other through the deepening global economic doldrums.

Carter was in China Friday for the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, Xinhua, China's state-run news agency, reported Saturday.

Speaking on behalf of U.S. President-elect Barack Obama, Carter urged deeper financial ties and continued Chinese investment in the United States.

While the two countries have different cultures, history and political systems, their strong bilateral relations unite them in wanting to strengthen the global economy, said Carter, who attended the opening of a photo exhibition showcasing the 30-year history of relations between China and the United States.
