Post-VP life includes fishing, Cheney says

WASHINGTON, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney says he's looking forward to returning to private life next week and perhaps do a little fishing.

"It's been a great career and I've been very fortunate to be able to serve," Cheney told The Hill Friday after the swearing in of Sen. Ted Kaufman, D-Del. "And I will miss it. On the other hand, I've got some things that I look forward to in private life." Cheney, as president of the Senate, swore in new senators.

Cheney's departure Tuesday is his fourth transition from government to private life. His career in Washington began as an aide to Rep. William Steiger, R-Wis., in 1969, before working for Donald Rumsfeld during the Nixon administration, the Washington publication said. He was President Gerald Ford's chief of staff. He also represented Wyoming in the U.S. House 1978-1989 reaching the post of minority whip.

Cheney was President George H.W. Bush's defense secretary 1989-1993 and chief executive officer of Halliburton before becoming vice president in 2001.

Cheney was cryptic about his plans outside of the public eye, only telling The Hill his plans include fishing.

"But," he said, "that's not all."
