LONDON, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Runway expansion plans for London's Heathrow Airport could be completed five years earlier than expected thanks to the British government, an official says.

Transport Minister Andrew Adonis said British ministers have requested that BAA Limited submit an expansion plan that is focused on having the project completed by 2015, The Times of London said Friday.

The initial government estimate for the new runway and terminal to open had been 2020.

"It is possible it could open in 2015 if the planning process is completed in time," Adonis said.

Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon has already supported the Heathrow project.

The project, which will cost nearly $13.3 billion, will help increase the London airport's overall capacity by nearly 50 percent.

Adonis did warn that until the airport additions are completed, Heathrow would likely endure long travel delays as the airport operates at more than 99 percent full.
