Court delays second Joe Cool trial

MIAMI BEACH, Fla., Jan. 15 (UPI) -- The retrial of Guillermo Zarabozo on charges he killed four Florida residents on board the Joe Cool has been delayed, a court says.

The Miami Herald said Thursday Zarabozo's retrial date was not rescheduled since the court decided to delay the start of his trial scheduled for next Tuesday.

No reason was reported for the trial delay, but the delay is expected to last at least one month.

During the former security guard's first trial in September, Zarabozo, 20, was convicted by a jury of having provided the firearm used to kill the four Joe Cool charter boat crew members.

The jury remained deadlocked regarding allegations Zarabozo actually participated in the kidnapping and eventual killing of those crew members.

The firearm verdicts against Zarabozo were thrown out by U.S. District Judge Paul Huck in the first trial after the judge said his jury instructions likely caused confusion.

Meanwhile, Zarabozo's co-defendant, Kirby Archer, offered up a guilty plea to murder charges in the case before the trial, the Herald reported.
