
TORONTO, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Almost all of Canada was experiencing a deep winter freeze Thursday, a day after temperatures in northern Quebec were below the temperature at the North Pole.
Meteorologists with the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said only the west coastal city of Vancouver and the east coast city of St. John's, Newfoundland, had highs above freezing Wednesday.
Tuesday, six southern Manitoba towns broke records with some lows of minus 46.
A vast stretch from Saskatchewan to Quebec experienced temperatures Wednesday as low as minus 58 degrees with the wind chill factored in, Environment Canada reported.
Thursday morning, Regina, Saskatchewan, was reporting air temperature of minus 31 degrees.
Wednesday morning, thousands of Toronto-area commuters were stranded at rail platforms when heaters used to keep track switches operating failed, the CBC said.
Cold was also blamed for three water main ruptures in Montreal, the report said.
