Officials investigate bid to sell ballot

SEATTLE, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Officials in Washington state are investigating a potential case of voter fraud in which someone allegedly tried to sell an absentee ballot on Craigslist.com.

The ad was posted on the site Oct. 19, less than a month before the Nov. 4 presidential election, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Tuesday.

The seller allegedly offered the mail-in ballot for "$50 or best offer," the newspaper reported.

"I do not vote. I am selling my 2008 absentee ballot for collector's (sic). It is signed. No candidates have been selected. This ballot is for collecting only, and must not be submitted in the election, as casting another person's ballot is illegal," the ad said.

The King County Sheriff's Office got a search warrant to determine the seller's identity.

"By providing a signed absentee ballot to another person, the person selling the ballot may be allowing a person who has already voted to vote a second time. Additionally, the person selling the ballot may be allowing an unqualified person to vote," such as a felon or nonresident, the search warrant said.
