LAS VEGAS, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Las Vegas police said Monday they had not yet determined why an elderly man shot a doctor to death in her office and then killed himself.

Police said the gunman apparently walked into an exam room, around 9:30 a.m. PST, shot Dr. Edna Makabenta and then turned the gun on himself.

A doctor in a nearby office told KLAS-TV in Las Vegas the shooter's wife was apparently a patient of Dr Makabenta. She was not with him at the time.

Patients at the medical office near Charleston and Rancho told the Las Vegas Review Journal Makabenta was getting ready to retire and had been cutting back on her hours and patient load.
