Officials: European drug ring busted

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- An international drug smuggling ring operating in Norway and Sweden has been broken up, officials said.

The Swedish news service TT reported officials seized more than three-quarters of a ton of narcotics and detained 30 people in Norway and Sweden.

Police in Norway began their investigation in summer 2007, TT said. Officials say the drug ring used legal means, such as flower shipments, to conceal drug shipments.

"We noticed that several people had bought quantities of hash and imported them into the country and we noted that these people had close contacts in Sweden," an official said.

Norwegian, Swedish, Dutch and Moroccan citizens are among the suspects detained as part of what officials have dubbed as Operation Happy Fish.
