GUANGZHOU, China, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Five people died and nine others were injured in a fireworks plant blast in southern China's Guangdong province Sunday, local officials said.
Xinhua, the state-run Chinese news agency, reported officials in Yingde City received reports of the explosion at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. The blast was in a privately-run workshop, a spokesman for the city government said, adding four people were killed immediately and another person died later in the hospital.
The victims included four women from Guangdong and a man from the central Hunan province, Xinhua reported. The blast came as China prepared for the Spring Festival, the country's most important holiday, which this year falls on Jan. 26.
