WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- A prison near Winnipeg, Canada, was locked down Sunday following a fight involving nearly 100 inmates, officials said.

Corrections officials said following Saturday night's brawl at Stony Mountain Institution, several prisoners barricaded themselves inside the medium-security prison's living unit, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Officials said after negotiating with the barricaded prisoners, the prison unit was secured early Sunday.

Five prisoners were injured in the melee and taken off-site for medical treatment. The extent of those injuries was not reported, but one inmate was later returned to the prison.

Prison spokesman Guy Langlois told the CBC the exact cause of the fight had yet to be determined, but that rival gangs inside the prison may have triggered the clash, which was ended by prison staff without the aid of area police.
