OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 11 (UPI) -- California Attorney General Jerry Brown says his office will monitor the investigation into the killing of an unarmed man by a Bay Area Rapid Transit officer.
Brown made the announcement after a meeting with the president of the California NAACP and other Bay Area black leaders, The Oakland (Calif.) Tribune reported.
Brown said he plans to keep a close eye on the investigation into the New Year's Day shooting of Oscar Grant III by former BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle.
"The wheels of justice cannot run so slowly," said Brown, the former mayor of Oakland. "It's important that I step in to do everything I can to bring a speedy conclusion."
Alameda County District Attorney Tom Orloff said Thursday he will decide within two weeks whether to file criminal charges against Mehserle, the newspaper reported. Mehserle has resigned from BART.
