PLAYA VERDE, Uruguay, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Ten houses in the Uruguayan resort town of Playa Verde were burned down and one man died in a weekend fire, authorities said Sunday.
The 56-year-old man died trying to help put out the blaze, which damaged several other homes and scorched several acres Saturday, the Latin American Herald Tribune reported.

A second man who lives in the area was arrested after allegedly admitting he started the fatal fire when he left a cooking fire unattended without making sure it was extinguished, the newspaper said.
Playa Verde is a popular vacation retreat for tourists.
