LONDON, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- A 43-year-old man died at a National Health Service hospital in Britain after not being provided with proper nourishment for 26 days, sources allege.
Sources said the alleged case of starvation at a NHS site will be part of a scathing review expected from the health watchdog group, Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, The Daily Mail said Friday.
"The Ombudsman will issue a damning verdict in most, though not all, of the cases," one of the unidentified sources said.
"In some cases the NHS's treatment of vulnerable people was quite shocking -- a patient effectively being starved to death is indefensible."
Martin Ryan died a London NHS hospital after suffering a major stroke that left him with an inability to swallow. Despite his affliction, staff at the hospital allegedly never fit him with a feeding tube and eventually he died of malnourishment, the sources said.
The expected Ombudsman report will also detail the case of a patient who allegedly was denied cancer treatment and the deaths of two young mothers whose pneumonia was allegedly misdiagnosed as the flu at NHS sites.
