WASHINGTON, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Speculation in Washington is swirling as to whether U.S. Sen. George Voinovich of Ohio will retire at the end of this term, observers say.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Friday that Voinovich, a Republican, has been raising money as if he faces a re-election challenge in 2010.
The newspaper reported that amid the speculation, Voinovich has set up a conference call with major donors Sunday night.
In an e-mail to contributors, Voinovich said he will discuss his plans for 2009 and 2010.
The former Ohio governor's office has said no retirement announcement is coming.
"For over 40 years, Sen. Voinovich has demonstrated a passion for public service. He is thinking about the challenging situation in his beloved Buckeye State and the direction of the country as well as what is best for his family. If he changes his mind about running, he will share that decision quickly with the people of Ohio -- people he considers his second family."
